Welcome to Learn Organic Gardening.
The garden has been certified by the Soil Association since 1989.
While looking around Covent Garden in the summer of 1987, I saw a stall called Common Ground. I was both interested and disappointed to hear that a lot of our heritage and old varieties of apples were rapidly disappearing from Britain, some to become extinct. It was a light bulb moment for me and I set about to research and plant an old English Apple orchard of 12 trees. I wrote to Brogdale National Fruit Collection for some advice and managed to graft my orchard in the spring of 1988. I
carefully planted them so the trees would be next to pollinating companions.
The Soil Association gave me Organic certification of my garden and orchard in 1989.
The orchard took about 4 years before it began to produce apples, and I was delighted that the apples are not only really tasty, but are all different shapes, sizes, colours and textures. I started to juice the apples myself, for our own consumption, and then I decided to try for an Organic label, so the apples were sent away to an Organic farm to be juiced.
The resulting juice is outstanding, in body and taste, so I entered it for a national award with the Soil Association ; BOOM (Best of Organic Market). To my amazement it won the soft drink category and was the overall winner of the non alcoholic drinks category, scoring higher than well known national supermarkets.
With this award I decided to graft some trees from my original orchard, so other people can share
these wonderful old varieties..
